This is where our journey begins.
Not with a single genre. Not with a single people. And not yet with the Seven Foundational Basins.
It begins with the source sounds and musical ideas that would meet, collide, survive, adapt, intertwine, and eventually help construct what we now call the Music of the Americas.
Three continents. Infinite connections. One human rhythm.
Echoes & Footprints — Echoes and Origins: Constructing the Music of the Americas™.
Original E&F source-layer framework identifying the musical worlds present before and during the early construction of the Music of the Americas: European traditions of harmony, melody and counterpoint; diverse African systems of call-and-response, polyrhythm, syncopation, complex vocal layering, improvisation and collective participation; and Native and Indigenous traditions of voice, percussion, dance, ceremony, storytelling and relationships to place. It functions as the conceptual bridge from Source → Encounter → Seven Foundational Basins, establishing what was already musically present before those traditions intertwined and developed into new musical systems across the Americas.
Before we ask “Where did the music take shape?”, Echoes and Origins asks “What musical knowledge arrived at the encounter?”
